Height 314 m above the sea level, tourism office tel. 0941533361,
people 4600. How to get there: |
In the 18th century it was called the “Little Palermo”. At that time it was the third Abbey of Sicily and the atmosphere of those olden days can be perpetuated going through the alleys and stairways of the historical centre or through the old sheep-tracks of its green hamlets. Pop traditions, sacred architecture, landscape foreshortenings and the friendly attitude of the people deeply attract the tourists giving them strong emotions and feelings. The mountains surround the town and slowly slide to the sea, the land is richly cultivated, and all is green. The houses disappear in the hazel groves, in the citrus plantations, in the vineyards, in the woods, in the beech-woods and in the centuries-old chestnut trees. In summer time, many cultural, music and sport events animate the town and its hamlets. Every year, in August, there is the Regional Fair “ Sapori della Valle di Sant’Angelo” aimed at showing the local products as the tasty salami and the artisan works made in wrought-iron, wood, copper and brass. Art: the historic and artistic patrimony, made up of many architectonic buildings and precious works of art, testifies the millenarian history of the town. Admirable are the Church dedicated to Saints Philip and James, the Saracen Tower, the Church dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi and the once convent of the Poor Clare, today municipal theatre. Gastronomy: it reveals pleasant surprises to those who look for genuine relish and peerless recipes. A particular mention is due to the “salami Sant’Angelo” which will soon obtain the prestigious denomination of geographic protected identification (I.G.P.), whose tastiness made the town known all over the world. In Sant’Angelo there is not only history and art but also tradition like on the 29th of September, when the town celebrates its patron, the Archangel Michel, with a popular feast where sacred and profane are melted together |
